for their Open House in November.

The Buckley School challenges students and helps them discover true joy in learning. This approach supports the school’s belief that when balance between these is achieved, the deepest and most authentic learning takes place.

Buckley is centrally located in Sherman Oaks with an enrollment of 805 students. The lower school follows a developmental approach, emphasizing hands-on projects and learning through play. Each grade is comprised of two classes allowing for approximately 20 students per class. For grades K-3 there are two teachers in each classroom. In grades 4 and 5, there is one full-time teacher in each class and is supported by an associate teacher who assist with both classes. In addition to the fundamental classes, the Lower School is enriched with specialist teachers for theatre, art, music, dance, science and computer science for all grades.

The Lower School also offers a special curriculum called Heartwork. Heartwork is a once-a-week alternative to homework in the Lower School that focuses on how to be a good person that was inspired by a conference on how empathy and compassion develop in the brain as well as teaching empathy in schools. Heartwork projects have ranged from discussions with parents about ethics and art projects exploring personal values, to letters of appreciation to relatives and public servants. Buckley also employs a special methodology for teaching writing called Writing Workshop. From Kindergarten on, all students are writers in this comprehensive classroom methodology in which nearly all of the Lower School teachers have now been trained at Columbia University Teachers’ College Writing Workshop Summer Institute. Students are engaged in significant daily writings to include revising personal narratives, poetry and analyzing, editing and revising their own work.

Buckley opened its Mathematics and Science Building this year and The Academic and Performing Arts Building opened in 2012. Along with the new openings were other campus renovations, including a new music room and refurbished theatre and computer science rooms. Later this year,a Lower School Farm, a garden classroom for science in grades K-2, is set to open its doors to students.

There have been recent esteemed additions to the staff including James Busby as the new head of school and a new assistant head of school, Peter Reinke. Collectively both men have over four decades of educational experience with some of the country’s most elite schools.

Students that attend The Buckley School are from across the San Fernando Valley and the westside of Los Angeles, including Beverly Hills.
